For the past six years, the Billabong XXL Awards has presented a competition putting the top professional surfers in the world to the test. It is a year-long competition annually concluding on March 31. During the time frame of April 1 to March 31 of the following year, professional surfers from many nations set out to chase and rip through as many big waves as possible.

The first prize for riding the biggest wave is a minimum payout of $68,000. Contestants receive an additional $1,000 for each foot above 68 feet. There are four other categories: the Monster Paddle-In Waves ($5,000), Monster Tube ($5,000), Best Combined Tow-Team Performance ($5,000) and Surfline/Jay Moriarity Best Overall Performance ($5,000).

What keeps these wave riding surfers full of enough energy to ride 66, 68 and 70 foot waves? It is the Monster Energy Drink, one of the sponsors of the Billabong XXL Awards (along with Honda Watercraft and Surfing Magazine).

The Monster Energy Drink is manufactured by Monster Beverage Company in Corona, Calif. Unlike a majority of energy drinks available today, Monster Energy Drink was the first of its kind to offer its beverage in a 16 oz can, which is twice the size of most other energy drinks (8.3
oz). There are plenty of variants to choose from, including Monster Lo-Carb, Monster Assault and Monster Khaos.

One of the most interesting features of the beverage can is its Monster Energy Logo and the tab. Each of the different beverages has a different colored Monster Energy logo—from the original green logo of Monster Energy to the orange logo of its most recent version, Monster Khaos.

The can’s tabs also are of interest. Unlike other canned beverages with standard pull tabs, these pull tabs are punched with an "M" and colored to match the drink inside. For example, the original monster energy logo is green with a green "M" punched pull-tab. The beverage also is green. Other colors include amber, blood-orange and orange.

Fans and aficionados of the Billabong XXL Awards, there are special edition collectors cans available in 24 oz. cans. This Monster Energy Drink is available in XXL and Lo-Carb XXL versions. Neither of these collectors cans come with the Monster Energy logo. Instead, they come with Billabong XXL logos lining the top of the can and colorless pull tabs.

Monster Energy has been the sponsor of the Billabong XXL Awards since its inception in 2002.
